About this area:
On the Colorado border resides a unique group of hikes, one on the shield volcano Ute Mountain in the San Luis Valley, the others in the Latir Peaks Wilderness, with multiple summits above 12,500'. These are accessed in two ways, either by driving into the RCCLA private campgrounds and the Latir Lakes with entrance fee, or via Cabresto Lake just East of Questa for a longer but free access up a wonderful trail to Heart Lake. From Santa Fe all of this can be accessed as a long day outing, but staying overnight is appealing to many, and the RCCLA campgrounds are extraordinary in their greenery, cleanliness, and tables with pavilions over them.
