TRAIL TIPS!
The portion of the actual track up to the mesa top shown in red on the interactive map above is steep and difficult - but also a lot of fun. A potentially better route is shown in blue on the proposed map below: click on 'View As Map' the 'Proposed easier way up', in the GPS Data section below.
The Diablo Mesa Loop hike differs from the other Diablo Canyon hikes in that the hike begins in the canyon itself, and then ascends to the top of the mesa and back down.
There are spectacular views of Diablo Canyon's cliffs and surroundings from both in the canyon and from the top of the mesa as well. Also, 360-degree views are available from the top that include the Rio Grande and the Jemez and Sangre de Cristo Mountain ranges.
