TRAIL TIPS!

Although this hike is rated "Moderate", much of the trail is easy, but there is one stretch where the slope is steep and the footing is somewhat tricky. The author traversed this section two days after some good rain, and the soil was more compact, but drier conditions could present some difficulty. Note: The trail is closed between March 1 and August 15.

About this hike:

The Fletcher Trail is a relatively short trail, accessed from the Piedra Lisa Trail, about 0.8 miles from the parking area where the trail dips down into a shallow gulley. The gulley is a meeting place of a couple of arroyos. Piedra Lisa continues to the left, and Fletcher branches off to the right, soon heading east towards the Sandia's Shield.

The views offered by Fletcher Trail are very nice, and the trail ends up approaching "The Prow", a prominent feature viewable at this end of the Sandias. Except for the steep section, the trail is pleasant as it follows the arroyo upstream. There are multiple views of the mountains en route. The blue flags shown on the interactive map above correspond to waypoints given in the Sandia Mountain Hiking Guide (see References below).
