The South Crest Trail begins the march of the 26-mile Crest Trail along the top of the Sandias. The original objective of this hike was to traverse the CCC Trail, which begins near the junction of the South Crest Trail with the Upper Faulty Trail. You must be on Upper Faulty to find the trail head, which is marked with a large pile of rocks.
You begin by hiking about 2.5 miles along the South Crest Trail, ascending about 1,000 ft to the start of the CCC Trail, which starts a very short distance from the juncture with Upper Faulty Trail. The CCC Trail ascends quite steeply and relentlessly from this point. Each mile along the trail goes up about 1,000 ft, for an average grade of 18%! The hike is primarily a physical challenge, as there is no scenery along the way. The author couldn't complete the journey to the top, but the remainder of the trail can be seen on the map by clicking on the 'CCC Trail' checkbox in the 'Tracks' box, located in the upper right hand corner of the map.
