TRAIL TIPS!
This is an off trail loop to see as many waterfalls as possible in a single day. Hazards include cliffs, fallen trees, brush and stickers.
This rediscovery hike is based on Doug Scott's waterfall hikes [See REFERENCES, Below]
This not a trail hike, although there are sections of old tracks in the western half of the loop. Instead it is bushwacking through forest that includes fallen trees to climb over and most important, the stickers (briars) that cannot be avoided. So long pants and long sleeved shirts of sturdy material are suggested.
We start off looping counter-clockwise on nice forest tracks until 1.1 miles (at 9048') and then bushwhack down to Vivian Falls on Redondo Creek (at 8886') then back up. Resume walking the forest track to 2.04 miles (at 8850') and cross forest road 93. Bushwhack on to 2.43 miles to see Double Falls on Puerco Creek. Then continue to mile 2.64 at Lichen Falls overlook which is a great lunch spot. Bushwhack steeply down to the base Lichen Falls for fantastic photo and video opportunities. Next Bushwhack onward to Resumidero Creek and go down stream to Box Falls at mile 3.73. An optional but exposed track can be done to Echo Falls where Resumidero and Puerco creeks join. Lastly, turn back and hike up Resumidero Creek to see numerous cascades including middle Resumidero, upper Resumidero and the cave falls.
How many Resumidero waterfalls are there ? Depends on the criteria of what is a waterfall plus there are access challenges. Maybe 5 waterfalls of 5+ feet on the fully explored Resumidero Creek with Box and Echo being the biggest. It is thought that on Redondo Creek only one falls, Vivian Falls exists. On Puerco Creek there is thought to be one so far unseen waterfall between Lichen Falls and Echo Falls. Below Echo, there are 3 miles of Puerco Creek that have not been walked above the known Puerco Falls to see if there are waterfalls along that segment or not. Answer : About 9 waterfalls.
Also there is an idea that Puerco creek itself between Lichen falls and Puerco falls (3 miles one way) could be walked during the heat of summer to see what's there !
