Lower Pine Trail

About this hike:

The Lower Pine Trail is tucked away to the East of the Manzanitas and affords nice views of the area and of the eastern slopes of the Sandias. It has easy and well-marked access near Zuzax off of I-40, and has parking sufficient for 6-8 cars, though it most often has few. This hike took place in the early winter and the author encountered no one on the trails until the afternoon, when some locals were walking their dogs on the beginning parts of the trail.

The hike makes a rather long loop around the canyon, affording some views in multiple directions. The views would be even more enjoyable when the meadows are green and wildflowers are in bloom. Too much snow would make the trail undesirable for hiking, as the sandy areas become moist and mud clings to the boots.
