Latirs Via Cabresto
TRAIL TIPS!This is the standard access to Latirs from the South, using FR134 Cabresto Creek road out of Questa. While FR134A is a bit rough as it approaches the lake, it is an official Carson NF road that many passenger cars and trailers pass over each week. Take it easy and you'll be fine.
Carson does a good job of maintaining the Heart Lake trail, so you should find it a watery delight, with many springs crossing the trail in the first few miles. Bull Creek trail intersects to make a large lollipop that is the usual choice of our group, but it is a strenuous 14 mile day with 3500' of gain, so just going above Heart Lake to get the view North has worked well for some in the past. Mountain sheep will often be seen grazing in the tundra above Heart Lake, and the general visage is unique by looking deep into Colorado and the San Luis valley, with mighty Blanca looming in the back. Southward, one sees Gold Hill and all of the Wheeler group too.
